After disclosing his homosexuality on national radio, gospel singer Danny was kidnapped, tortured, beaten and dumped on a roadside by Ugandan security forces. He had to flee his home country and the persecution he faced there – persecution brought to Uganda in part by a group of secretive, politically-connected Washington, DC-based conservative extremists called “The Family.” With the help of the Organization for Refuge, Asylum, and Migration (ORAM) and Jewish Family and Children’s Services of the East Bay (JFCS/East Bay), Danny has resettled in the Bay Area where he finally feels safe and free. Avi Rose of JFCS/East Bay, Neil Grungras of ORAM, and Danny Dyson tell his harrowing story and how they are helping LGBT people in countries around the world where homosexuality brings severe penalties. (Live interview hosted by Eric Jansen Thursday, 1/17/13, on 91. 7 FM Bay Area & kalw.org worldwide; archived after broadcast at www.OutintheBay.org )
