Tom Morello, Sonya Kitchell In Concert
Tom Morello and Sonya Kitchell are both guitarists, and they share a concert stage Friday afternoon, but that's where the similarities end. Morello is world-renowned for his work in Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave — and has recently reinvented himself as a protest singer — while Kitchell is a 19-year-old who's moved beyond child-prodigy status to forge a career in music that spans blues, folk, jazz, rock and country. An innovative arena-rock guitar hero, Morello has more recently followed the path of Bob Dylan, but in reverse: He's gone acoustic, singing unabashedly left-wing protest songs that pull no punches. Recording as The Nightwatchman, he's recorded two solo albums: One Man Revolution and his new disc, The Fabled City.
As for Kitchell, she channels the force and maturity of an artist well beyond her years. Her considerable talent as a guitarist is matched by her fierce, boisterous and versatile voice: Her new album, This Storm, finds Kitchell sounding more sophisticated than ever, yet still gutty and powerful.
