Becoming a charter school, a tech company driven not by profits but by humanitarian concerns, a fatherly story in time for Father's Day, what a true love means, and local musicians T.V. Mike and the Scarecrowes.

At 8 o’clock on a Tuesday morning, about 400 students stand at attention. They’re outside the Fruitvale Oakland elementary school, Learning Without Limits (LWL). They recite the following vision statement, as they do every day upon arrival: “We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us as we grow into leaders who are passionate and care about making our world better. We are equipped with skills and knowledge, filled with curiosity and we know that even when we face challenges, we will achieve!”

Sometimes, even when we are sure that we want to do good in the world, it helps to get words of advice and guidance from an older and wiser friend. These types of mentorships are hard to come by – but a group of artists decided they would start the dialogue for one community through art. What was born out of that desire was the art installation called Question Bridge: Black Males, a video dialogue between over 150 black men from across the country, talking about some of life's biggest topics: racism, sexuality, success, and love.

John Abendroth is a member of the Olympic Club, the site of this year’s US Open. It’s the nation’s oldest athletic club – founded in 1860. Abendroth has been a member since 1967 and now he’s the media chair for the Open. KALW’s Ben Trefny joined him at the venerable space a few weeks ago, for a behind the scenes look at the Olympic Club as it was being transformed for golf’s national championship.
