It’s practically the weekend, and if you’re wondering how you’re going to spend it, here are a few suggestions on what to do and where to go around the Bay Area.
On Saturday, everyone is invited to bring a bucket and help keep our stretch of coastline clean at the 2015 California Coastal Cleanup Day. Last year, nearly 70,000 volunteers removed over a million pounds of trash and recyclables from California's beaches, lakes, and waterways. If you haven’t had a chance to participate in a coastal cleanup event before, I personally recommend it. You meet great folks, and the before and after experience you have through the course of the day feels pretty fantastic.
Go to parksconservancy.org to register for one of the planned cleanups happening around the Bay Area on Saturday. They have a map on the website too, and some helpful tips as to what you should bring along with you and what to wear.
While you’re cleaning the shoreline, feel free to leave your landlubber speech behind, and adopt one of a pirate, because Saturday is also Talk Like a Pirate Day. If you need to brush up on your piratical vernacular, 826 Valencia will educate visitors on the finer points of what speaking like a pirate actually means, and there will be performances from the Pirates of Penzance happening at their Valencia location all day long.
After helping out the Bay Area coastline, get up close and personal with some of the smallest critters who call the waters around the Bay Area home. On Sunday afternoon, the California Center for Natural History will host a tour of Lake Merritt’s invertebrates. You can expect to see bizarre sea squirts, astonishing polychaetes, cuddly sponges, and a surprising variety of mollusks and bivalves. RSVP at calnature.org.
