Weekend Go-Tos for February 19, 2016

Get a front row seat to migratory bird flights this weekend on Mare Island.

Happy Friday, everybody! We have a few recommendations of what to do around the Bay Area this weekend.

Tonight, celebrate both Mardi Gras and the Lunar New Year in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood. The Bayview Opera House’s 3rd on Third neighborhood event series is throwing a block party and parade, starting at 5:00 p.m., which will include: musicians, stilt walkers, local dance troupes, mask and crown making, photo booth, free trolley float rides, and more. Entry is free and everyone is welcome, but do RSVP online if you can.

All day Saturday and Sunday, welcome migratory birds back to the Bay Area with the 20thAnnual SF Bay Flyaway Festival. The fest celebrates the migration through San Francisco Bay of more than 1 million shorebirds and hundreds of thousands of ducks, geese, hawks, songbirds and other wildlife. Besides guided hikes and outings for optimal bird watching, there will also be a wildlife and birding expo and a full weekend of tours and workshops on Mare Island. For full details, including event times and locations, head to sfbayflyawayfestival.com.

The AikumaProject celebrates International Mother Language Day this Sunday, by hosting an afternoon of storytelling in California immigrant and Indigenous languages. You’re invited to experience a gathering of storytellers from Burkina Faso, Eritrea, and the Indigenous Americas, who have made California their home. And if you don’t know the languages, don’t worry, while elders share their stories, interpreters will be on hand to translate. It’s all happening at Awaken Cafe on Broadway in Oakland, 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Is there an event happening this weekend that you'd like folks to know about? Feel free to add it below in the comments section.
