At the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights' 20th anniversary celebration in Oakland on September 8th, W. Kamau Bell moderated a panel featuring Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors, Equal Justice Society's founder and President Eva Paterson, and Equal Justice Initiative's founder and Executive Director Bryan Stevenson.
The panelists discussed the Ella Baker Center's vision for Truth and Reinvestment: acknowledging how our country's long history of racial injustice has resulted in a criminal justice system that targets black, brown, and poor people, and reinvesting in those communities who have been most harmed. Conversation topics ranged from Colin Kaepernick, to the presidential election, to what reparations can mean today.
