This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the Bay Area performing arts, guest host Renee Kemp talks with actresses Denmo Ibrahim and Nadine Malouf from the cast of A Thousand Splendid Suns, which runs through July 29 at A.C.T.’s Geary Theater.

Based on the international best-selling novel by Bay Area author Khaled Hosseini, A Thousand Splendid Suns is the epic story of three generations of Afghan women who are bound together by marriage, family, and a secret past, amid the war-torn streets of modern-day Kabul.

From the Merola Opera Program, we meet with Tara Faircloth, who directs Mozart’s opera Il re pastore (‘The Sheperd King’), as part of Merola’s 2018 Summer Festival, which runs through August 18, when it ends with the Grand Finale.

Set in classical times, Il re pastore explores the struggle between love and power, as Aminta, a shepherd, turns out to be the rightful heir to the throne of Sidon. Performances of Il re pastore are on July 19 (7:30pm) and July 21 (2pm) at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (50 Oak Street).

Plus, we check in with the goings-on at Music@Menlo’s sixteenth festival, Creative Capitals, in a conversation with violinist Aaron Boyd.

The 2018 edition of Music@Menlo takes a musical and historical journey through seven cultural Capitals of Western Music: London, Paris, St. Petersburg, Leipzig, Berlin, Budapest, and Vienna. Through August 4, the festival presents concerts, master classes and multimedia symposia in three venues in Atherton and Menlo Park.

Open Air with guest host Renee Kemp, heard live on Thursday, July 19 at 1pm. Listen now or anytime…
