The Spot: Underground Sounds

Sound traveling on an axis 700 fathoms down in the Atlantic Ocean, circa 1948.

This week on KALW's showcase for the best stories from public radio podcasts and independent radio producers...

700 Fathoms Under the Sea,” from the podcast Transistor, 2014.

Transistor is a STEM-focused podcast where radio producers are paired with scientists to create stories as inventive as the science they’re researching. About a half mile under the sea, ocean physics creates a special zone where sound travels for hundreds, even thousands of miles. And in this episode of Transistor, they’re set to detail the science that operates in that zone and tell us a bit about how loud our underwater worlds can be.

Underground Worlds,” from the podcast Distillations, June 2016.

Now that we’ve dried off from our underwater research, let’s take a different kind of plunge. How about one that will send us hundreds of feet below our streets and sidewalks to uncover natural worlds that can exist under a city’s ground? And we have just the right tour guide -- the science and technology podcast Distillations.

Listen to past episodes of Distillations on Soundcloud, or download the Distillations listening app on iTunes and Google Play.

This week's episode featured music from: Black Moth Super Rainbow, Saturday Day Looks Good to Me, Mark Mothersbaugh, and ChristianBakonic's Trio Infernal.
