Poet, Natasha Huey

Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. Our guest is Natasha Huey:  poet and teaching artist for youth through Performing Arts Workshop. Her poetry students from Galileo High school will perform in the Rhythm and Rhymes, youth showcase at Brava Theater later this month.

Huey told KALW’s Jen Chien about three cool arts events happening this weekend around the Bay.

On Saturday, 5/14 and Sunday, 5/15, Fairytale, a new multimedia show, created and performed by youth from RYSE Center in Richmond is playing at the El Cerrito Performing Arts Theater.  The plot explores dating violence and communal healing in a production that combines mixed media with live performance.

HUEY: It’s an extremely talented group of young people doing extremely important work that is connected to art and community and really trying to transform our world.

AYPAL--Building API Community Power hosts their annual May Arts Festival on Saturday,  5/14, at Oakland’s San Antonio Park in collaboration with Eastside Arts Alliance. With the theme “Reclaiming Our Roots”, the festival aims to unite youth around resilience and creativity. Featuring youth dance and theater performances, spoken word, music performances by Mass Bass, Rocky Rivera and DJ Celski, with a keynote address by Eddy Zheng.

HUEY: It’s about people making community together and rallying behind arts, activism, and young people holding space in a time when gentrification is attempting to tear that apart.

Welcome to the Dawn (A Prince Tribute to Remember) happens Friday, 5/13, at the New Parish in Oakland. Local DJ’s and artists will pay homage to Prince, a prolific singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who died just last month at the age of 57.  Performances by Kev Choice, Silk E, Netta B., 1- O,A.K., Viveca Hawkins & more. A portion of the proceeds from the show will go to youth music organizations: Youth Aid Non Profit & Elevate Oakland.

HUEY: As an artist, Prince was impossible to classify, pushing down boundaries and bringing so many people together, too.
