Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. Our guest is Rene Yung: artist, designer and director of Chinese Whispers, a research and performance project that uncovers the history of Chinese pioneers in the American West.
Yung told KALW’s Jen Chien about three cool arts events happening this week around the Bay.
Retrieved, a photography exhibit, is jointly showing at SF Camerawork through Saturday, 4/16, and at Chinese Culture Center through Saturday, 5/14. The projects of three artists – Kurt Tong, Thomas Sauvin and Daniel Traub – function as constructed archives and contemplate Chinese identity, the passage of time, and cultural influences.
YUNG: This whole show is an interesting statement about globalization, circulation of people, and also ownership of stories.
San Francisco Opera’s SF Opera Lab presents Winterreise Friday, 3/11, through Sunday, 3/13. The song cycle for voice and piano by 19th century Austrian composer Franz Schubert features German baritone, Matthias Goerne, and pianist Markus Hinterhäuser with projections of South African artist William Kentridge’s animations.
YUNG: The music allows the listener a place to imagine and wander in their own minds.
The 2016 CAAMFEST kicks off tonight and runs through Sunday, 3/20. This is a yearly festival of Asian American film, music and food presented by the Center for Asian American Media. On Monday, 3/14, Alamo Drafthouse shows the filmJasmine, a tense thriller about a grieving husband's search for clues in the wake of his wife's murder.
