New San Francisco police chief William Scott tells how he'll reform the SFPD

Ben Trefny
Chief William Scott

When William Scott was sworn in to lead San Francisco’s police department in January, he became a rare chief for the city —one hired from outside the ranks.

He came from Los Angeles, where he was deputy police chief and that department’s highest ranking African American officer. He was also recognized as an emotionally intelligent leader. That was a valued quality in San Francisco, where former chief Greg Suhr was forced out of office last year after some highly publicized officer involved shootings. KALW’s Ben Trefny sat down with Chief Scott to talk about his new job leading the San Francisco Police Department.

SCOTT: In order to be a 21st century police department, to get to where we want to get to, you make the change and then you have to practice what you say you’re going to do. That's the test.
