Curator Ashara Ekundayo is the definition of a modern renaissance woman — her work bridges art, food, tech, and community. Her latest project, the newly openedAshara Ekundayo Gallery in Oakland, is a space that will showcase new work by Black women, women of the African Diaspora, and their collaborators. Ashara came to KALW’s studios to talk with Jen Chien about why she wanted to create this space.
"There are very few Black art galleries in the Bay Area — very few galleries that exclusively show Black art. And so my commitment is to exclusively display and amplify the voices of Black women artists. And that includes cis, trans, and gender non-conforming folks. And to be unapologetic about that."
Ashara Ekundayo Gallery's first exhibit, “Obvious Magic: This Womanist Imaginary” will be up until April 14th.
