On-Air Folk Festival ~ 11/3

KALW's On-Air Folk Festival!

  • The Pacific Guitar Ensemble live on air!
  • Antje Duvekot live on air!

On Saturday November 3rd  from 3 to 8 pm, we had five hours of continuous live music performed by some of the Bay Area's finest talent.  Hosted by JoAnn Mar, Kevin Vance, and Peter Thompson.  Listen anytime through 11/10 at 3pm via KALW's Local Music Player.

3 pm   The Pacific Guitar Ensemble, led by classical guitarist David Tanenbaum and steel-string guitarist Peppino D’Agostino with members of the guitar faculty from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.  The Ensemble’s repertoire features original music by composers like Brazilian guitar legend Sergio Assad, noted minimalist Belinda Reynolds, and the group’s own Peppino D’Agostino.  It also includes fresh arrangements of great composers from Bach to Brahms, Dowland to Rossini.

4 pm   Antje Duvekot is a highly original, award-winning singer-songwriter from Germany who is now based in Masschusetts.  Her dark and evocative songs have earned praises from fellow songcrafters Richard Shindell and John Gorka, and critic Dave Marsh.  She'll perform songs from her brand new release "New Siberia."

5:00 pm    Solstice is a female vocal ensemble specializing in music written by women or for women's voices. Their music spans many different genres with an emphasis on world, classical, pop, and jazz.  They are also committed to performing new works for women's voices and regularly compose, commission, and arrange new songs.  Solstice includes members Emily Bender, Becca Burrington, Lark Coryell, Krista Enos, Mari Marjamaa, Kim Warsaw, and Sara Webb-Schmitz.

5 :45pm   Vanessa Lowe is a local singer/songwriter/guitarist, as well as an independent radio producer.  The East Bay Express pegged Lowe’s music as “dream-pop-meets-indie-folk”, and she doesn’t object to that description.   Her new album is called, “Stars of Bean Hollow”.

6:30 pm   Oak Grove is a family bluegrass band - the Schwartz family from Walnut Creek - with brothers Nate (mandolin) and Max (banjo), sister Tessa (fiddle), mom Gail (bass), and dad Bob (guitar). Everybody sings.

7:15 pm  The Drifter Sisters, a new Bay Area trio with Robin Fischer (fiddle, vocals), Allegra Thompson (guitar, bass), and Hailey Pexton (guitar, mandolin) -- combine honky tonk country and bluegrass/old time/good time music.
