This week on Open Air, host David Latulippe talks with Mitchell Covington, Conductor and Founding Director of Voci Women’s Vocal Ensemble, about ‘Rejoice! Rejoice!’, the group’s upcoming holiday concerts, with music from Renaissance and Baroque by composers like Bach, Hasse, Charpentier, Vivaldi and Victoria.
The performances, accompanied by the Jubilate Baroque Orchestra and featuring soloist MacKenzie Covington, are in Alameda (Dec 3), Oakland (Dec 9) and Berkeley (Dec 10).
Also joining us in the studio are musicians James Jaffe (cello), James Schulz (bass) and Kristin Lloyd (harp), from One Found Sound (OFS), to give a live musical preview of the upcoming concert of this conductorless collaborative chamber orchestra. The performance is on December 8 at Heron Arts in San Francisco’s SOMA District (7 Heron Street), and includes music from Rameau, Brahms and Ginastera. OFS founders Sarah Bonomo and Emily Botel share details about the concert, which is part of the ensemble’s fifth anniversary season.
From SAFEhouse Arts, we meet with Founder and Executive Director Joe Landini who celebrates 25 years of dance making in San Francisco with ‘5 ON 25: A Celebration for Joe Landini’s 25th Anniversary’, with new works by Alma Esperanza Cunningham, Nina Haft, Ronja Ver as well as by Landini himself.
‘5 ON 25’ opens on Dec 7 and runs through Dec 16 at SAFEhouse Arts’ new home (145 Eddy Street) and includes an encore presentation of ‘SoMa Now and Then’, a collaboration between Amy Lewis and Landini which premiered last fall as a walking tour of San Francisco’s historic leather district.
Plus, Open Air’s regular contributor and critic at large Peter Robinson shines his light on the British biographical war drama ‘Darkest Hour’, with Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, and he discusses recent and upcoming performances at SF Jazz.
