Eclectic electronic musician Maya Songbird: Sights & Sounds

Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene. The eclectic electronic musician Maya Songbird, who'll be playing this Friday at the Octopus Literary Salon in Oakland, told KALW’s Ninna Gaensler-Debs about three fantastic arts events happening around the Bay this week.

Moira Scar is a local band from Oakland who play grungy electronic with a witchy vibe.  The band started as a collaboration between artists Roxy Monoxide and LuLu Gamma Ray, and they later added drummer Mikey Mayhem to round out their synth punk dancey sound. The band describes themselves as “a carnival for lost souls and a caravan for freaks.” They open for Psychic TV,  at the Independent in San Francisco.

SONGBIRD: "I love Moira Scar. LuLu and Roxy are amazing, they're amazing performers. They're so alive!"

Queer Farmer Field Day is dedicated to celebrating and exploring the intersections of queer and trans family, agroecology, and movements for racial justice and gender liberation at UCSS Farm. Learn about sustainability, queer ecology, and herbal salve making. There will also be farm tours, face painting, collaborative art, and a dance party. This event is hosted by the Queer Farmers of the Ecological Horticulture Apprenticeship program at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems.

SONGBIRD: "I'm excited about the fact that you learn about farming and how to feed your community the queer and then you top it off with some good old queer dancing."

The Good Craft is popping up with an all-women craft market at Temescal Brewing in Oakland, in collaboration with Honey & Rouge, a sustainable feminist fashion blog. The pop-up market will feature over 20 Bay Area artists and artisans including BlackSheepMade, Good Luck Embroidery, and Nettle Studios. Apercentage of proceeds will go to the Essie Justice Group, working to harness the collective power of women with incarcerated loved ones to empower women and end mass incarceration.

SONGBIRD: "I have some friends that will be vending, April May Jewelry, Concept Forty-Seven...They're local women who vend great jewelry and art."
