Fire inspectors seek legal action against landlords in Mission // SF Gate
"Fire inspectors are seeking legal action against the owners of three apartment buildings in the Mission District for blocking fire escapes and having alarm systems that don’t work.
"The request that the city attorney’s office pursue legal action comes soon after two deadly fires in the Mission and complaints that at least one of the burned buildings was for years in violation of safety code regulations."

Racist, homophobic texts by San Francisco police trigger case reviews// LA Times

"A slew of racist and homophobic text messages exchanged between San Francisco police in a fellow officer’s corruption case has forced prosecutors and defense attorneys to review an estimated 1,000 criminal convictions for potential bias, officials announced Tuesday.

"The messages were revealed in a motion by the U.S. attorney’s office opposing bail for Ian Furminger, a former San Francisco police officer who was recently sentenced to 41 months in prison on various corruption-related charges and was scheduled to surrender next month pending an appeal."

Activists Shape Oakland Coliseum Area Plan // East Bay Expresss

"A massive, 25-year plan for developing a big swath of East Oakland, from the Coliseum to the airport, will go to the Oakland City Council on March 31. But the plan looks very different from the first draft issued by the city last August. Planning commissioners credited the changes to feedback from community groups and public agencies.

"'Thanks to the leadership of dozens of residents, workers, faith leaders, and youth, the plan has evolved significantly," said East Oakland resident Reverend Damita Davis-Howard, a member of Oakland Community Organizations (OCO). The plan, Davis-Howard continued, now 'incorporates elements of our vision of good jobs for local residents; affordable housing, especially for families, and measures to stabilize neighborhoods and contribute to a cleaner environment.'"

Teen Health Van Hopes to Serve More Tenderloin Youth // Hoodline

"Since 1999, Lucille Packard’s Adolescent Teen Health Van has been parking in front of 375 Eddy St., at Indochinese Housing Development Corporation's youth-serving summer programming site. The mobile clinic offers a monthly five-hour window of free comprehensive healthcare services for uninsured and underinsured youth and young adults of the Tenderloin and beyond, ages 10 to 25.

"But since a temporary closure of after-school services, and a revamping of community offerings at IHDC, the van has seen a drop-off in the numbers of local youth that utilize the van's services."

SF Archdiocese apologizes for using sprinklers to deter homeless// SF Examiner

"The Archdiocese of San Francisco is removing a sprinkler system from St. Mary’s Cathedral that was used to try to deter homeless people from sleeping in the church’s doorways.

"Catholic officials issued an apology Wednesday for the sprinkler system, which was installed about two years ago after the archdiocese said it learned that such a system was being used in the Financial District to keep areas safe and clean.

"Homeless advocates, however, were aghast to learn of the sprinkler system at the church."
