Black Parents Say ‘Make UC an Option’ for African Americans // New America Media

"OAKLAND, Calif. -- The cost of a University of California education, feeling welcomed on campus and whether academic records are strong enough. These were among the concerns raised by a group of 16 African American parents - educators, counselors, community college students - in a candid conversation with UC President Janet Napolitano.

"The recent two-hour exchange at Youth UpRising in East Oakland came at the request of the UC head, who has expressed concern over the relatively low numbers of African American students enrolled in the 10 campus UC system. Youth Uprising CEO Olis Simmons co-chaired the exchange and invited the participants."

The Women Who Feed the Migrants: A Mission Painter’s View // Mission Local

"Claudio Talavera Ballon — a painter whose work attempts to focus on the humanity of immigrants and the impoverished — found himself drawn to a group of women who help immigrants reach their destination in Mexico or the United States. The women are known as Las Patronas.

"Las Patronas work from a small village outside the Mexican town of Córdoba, in the state of Veracruz, giving supplies to immigrants making the dangerous trek north across the United States border."

Warriors' 73rd win sets ratings record for CSN Bay Area // Mercury News

"The Warriors' record-breaking 73rd win was the highest-rated telecast ever on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, the station announced Thursday.

"Golden State's 125-104 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies received a 23.22 household rating and peaked at 28.57 at about 9:45 p.m., which was shortly before the game ended. That meant the telecast averaged about 577,025 households in the San Francisco designated market area and went up to approximately 709,983 households as the record win was about to become official."

New SFMTA Report Shows Major Citywide Increase In Cyclists // Hoodline

"The SFMTA released the results of its 2015 bike count today, estimating that around 82,000 bicycle trips are now taken each day in San Francisco every day. And biking is still on the rise: according to the report, weekday trips by bike in the city increased by 8.5 percent from 2014 to 2015 alone.

"Based on a citywide study of 19 key intersections, cycling trips as a whole have increased 184 percent from 2006 to 2015."

Ferry service will expand to Richmond, Treasure Island with $4M grant // San Francisco Business Times

"A federal grant of $4 million will allow two new berths to be built at the San Francisco Ferry building, allowing an expansion of ferry service to Richmond and Treasure Island, the Water Emergency Transportation Authority said this week.

"'Improvements to the San Francisco Ferry Building ‘hub’ is a key element to expanding our services on the bay and validation of the important role ferry service will play in the future of the Bay Area’s transit infrastructure,' Nina Rannells, executive director of the authority, told the San Francisco Chronicle."

"Why some have made a beeline for Interstate 5 in hopes of making it to Coachella on time, many San Franciscans have opted to stay behind for the best festival of all – Goatchella.

"Goatchella, a festival that took place at the Ferry Building Saturday April 16, 2016 during the weekly farmer's market was created by the non-profit CUESA, seven years ago. The event features a small petting stable, cheese tasting, and cooking demos all in honor of the sheep's four legged cousin, the G.O.A.T."
