City College of San Francisco stands to lose accreditation

A decision is due today on the issue of whether City College of San Francisco will lose its accreditation. City College of San Francisco students, teachers, and staff launched a rally outside City Hall on Thursday to express their growing concerns with the college's administration and possible shutdown.

“There’s so many people who are concerned about what's happening at City College – and they're so shocked that we're at this place, knowing how amazing our institution is, I mean,” said Shannell Williams, one of the founders of Save CCSF, the group organizing Thursday’s rally. “We've been around for 77 years. We provide transfer services, GED, vocational services. We have one in three people in San Francisco have been touched by our college. And so when I run into people they are in complete shock that we received such a harsh sanction given that we have no prior sanction from the ACCJC."

This past summer, the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) said it planned to take away the college's accreditation if it did not comply with a number of its requests, including fixing the college’s perceived financial issues. The proposals range from faculty budget and benefits cuts, to growing the college’s reserve through Proposition A money.
