EXPLORATIONS IN MUSIC – The Contemporary and The Classic Come Together
KALW continues its association with San Francisco Performances for a seven part series beginning October 6. The Alexander String Quartet and Robert Greenberg highlight the connections between contemporary composers and the classic string quartet repertoire. Hear how Joseph Haydn inspires Elliot Carter, how George Crumb quotes directly from Franz Schubert's Death and the Maiden for a riveting protest of the Vietnam War, and the connection Lou Harrison had with the music of Maurice Ravel. Musicologist Robert Greenberg offers insightful and entertaining commentary, coupled with the musical mastery of the ASQ; KALW's Alan Farley hosts. And, in two special programs, world-renowned pianist Garrick Ohlsson brings a fresh perspective to the world of Russian piano music.
